Webinfosys's Sports News : India thrash Pakistan by 6 wickets

KARACHI, AFP: Virendar Sehwag punished Pakistan's bowling with an aggressive hundred to lead India to a comfortable six-wicket win in the final Group B Asia Cup match here on Thursday.

Sehwag smashed a 95-ball 119 and Suresh Raina hit a 68-ball 84 during their 198-run second wicket stand to help India overhaul Pakistan's 299-4 with 7.5 overs to spare.

Earlier, Shoaib Malik hit his first century as captain to help Pakistan post a challenging target.

However, it proved a cake walk for India who were indebted to some lusty batting by Sehwag and Raina as the duo tore apart the home bowling, which lost its bite after frontline paceman Umar Gul broke down with a side strain.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Lanka beat UAE by 142 runs

LAHORE (Pakistan), AFP: Unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis took a career-best 5-22 to help Sri Lanka overcome a fighting United Arab Emirates by 142 runs in the final Group A match played at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Thursday.

Mendis triggered a collapse in the UAE batting ranks as the qualifiers lost eight wickets for 41 runs to slump from a threatening 107-2 to be bowled out for 148 in 36.3 overs chasing Sri Lanka's 290-9.

For the UAE left-handed opener Amjad Ali top scored with a brilliant 79-ball 77 but once the Lahore-born batsman fell, wickets tumbled like nine pins with Mendis running through the middle and lower order with his beguiling action.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Collingwood banned for four One-dayers

LONDON: England One-day captain Paul Collingwood was banned for four matches on Thursday after his side failed to bowl their overs in the required time in Wednesday's One-Day International against New Zealand.

A statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC) said Collingwood would miss the fifth and final match against New Zealand at Lord's on Saturday.

He will also be suspended from a One-day match against Scotland on August 18, a Twenty20 match against South Africa and the first One-Day International against the Proteas.

The ICC said Collingwood was banned because Wednesday's offence was his team's second within a year.

Collingwood was fined 50 percent of his match fee when England fell short of the required over rate in a One-Day International against India on August 24 last year.

The suspension completes a miserable two days for Collingwood who admitted on Wednesday he had been wrong not to recall New Zealand batsman Grant Elliott who was run out after a collision with bowler Ryan Sidebottom.

Although New Zealand won the game off the last ball, the Kiwi team were incensed and captain Daniel Vettori refused to shake Collingwood's hand after the match.

Vettori, whose team take an unbeatable 2-1 lead into the Lord's match, later accepted an apology from Collingwood at the post-match victory ceremony.

Webinfosys's Sports News : India rout Hong Kong by 256 runs

KARACHI, AFP: Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina hit aggressive hundreds to lead India to a huge 256-run win over Hong Kong in their Asia Cup Group B match here on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Raina compiled a 68-ball 101 for his maiden century while Dhoni notched an unbeaten 96-ball 109 as both shared a rapid-fire 166-run fourth wicket stand to shot India to the highest Asia Cup total of 374-4.

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla then spun Hong Kong with figures of 4-23 as the minnows were bundled out for a paltry 118 in 36.5 overs.

India meet Pakistan on Thursday to decide who tops the Group. Pakistan beat Hong Kong by 155 runs.

Webinfosys's Sports News :India, Pakistan gear up for the battle

KARACHI, PTI: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is happy with his team carving out an easy win against Hong Kong in Asia Cup league match but says the match against Pakistan would be an altogether different game on Wednesday.

"It was a good game to start the tournament. The start was perfect by Viru and Gambhir. They gave us the start we were looking for and then Raina batted well," Dhoni said after a comprehensive 256-run win.

Dhoni, who himself scored a hundred, said Pakistan are doing well these days and it would be tough a match against the archrivals.

"It is good to play when they are at their best. They know the conditions well and the wicket is also not easy. It is difficult to rotate the strike. If bowlers get early wickets it would be difficult to score," he said.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Kapil's Devils celebrate 25 years since World Cup triumph

LONDON: The members of the 1983 World Cup-winning India cricket team on Wednesday marked 25 years since their historic victory over the West Indies, their lone triumph in the tournament.

Captain Kapil Dev's 14-man squad attended a private function in the pavilion at Lord's, followed by a gala dinner, a quarter century to the day since their stunning upset over Clive Lloyd's powerhouse side at the ground.

"It changed our lives," said the skipper, who described the win as "a very important day in Indian history".

"In our country there is no other sport in people's minds or anybody's mind," he added.

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar, an opening batsman in the final, said that the entire team "feel very special about the moment, that we were part of India's cricketing history".

Despite entering the final as underdogs, and managing to set the West Indies a target of just 183 after batting first, India denied their opponents a hat-trick of World Cup titles with a 43-run win.

Dev paid tribute to the West Indies team that India defeated, describing them as "really rich in every sense" while team member Ravi Shastri joked that the "25th of June doesn't exist in the West Indies calendar".

After posing for photographs and speaking to journalists, the team members gathered to once again hoist aloft the 1983 World Cup trophy, which has been on display in the Lord's museum.

They first celebrated the 25th anniversary last weekend in New Delhi, when the team were feted by the top brass of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at a dinner attended by former captains, cabinet ministers and officials at a luxury hotel.

The gathering at Lord's was organised by Gavaskar, while liquor baron Vijay Mallya sponsored the dinner.

A diamond-studded bat signed by all the team members as well as a specially-designed ball also covered in diamonds are to be auctioned in a few weeks by Mallya's United Breweries group to mark the occasion, with the proceeds being shared equally by the members of the 1983 squad.

Since 1983, India's best World Cup finish has been the runners-up spot achieved by skipper Sourav Ganguly's side in South Africa in 2003 when they lost to Australia in the final.

In the last edition in 2007 in the Caribbean, India suffered the embarrassment of being knocked out in the first round after losing to minnows Bangladesh and eventual finalists Sri Lanka.

The next World Cup will be jointly hosted by cricket's four leading Asian nations -- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh -- in 2011.

India's 1983 World Cup squad: Kapil Dev (capt), Sunil Gavaskar, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Mohinder Amarnath, Yashpal Sharma, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Kirti Azad, Syed Kirmani (wkt), Roger Binny, Madan Lal, Balwinder Sandhu, Ravi Shastri, Sunil Valson

Webinfosys's Sports News : Dhoni wants to do a Kapil Dev at Lord's

LONDON: Mahendra Singh Dhoni wants his Dazzlers to emulate Kapil's Devils at Lord's next year by holding the Twenty20 World Cup aloft the 1983 champions who are now celebrating the silver jubilee of their historic triumph.

Dhoni said he would like to become the first India captain after Kapil Dev in 1983 to lift a trophy at Lord's.

"I would love to do that. It's the team that makes a good captain and I would like to distribute the pressure and responsibility around the whole team. It would be a dream to lift the trophy at Lord's..," Dhoni said a day before tickets are to go on sale here for the championship

Dhoni said his team will carry a lot of expectations of the people in India as his team are the defending champions.

"For us, of course, the last year's world championship in South Africa was memorable and it was a great feeling to lift that trophy. We had gone into it as underdogs -- no one really expected us to win it as we had barely played one Twenty20 International match before the tournament."

"It was a great tournament and one of the things I will cherish for the rest of my life."

Dhoni said they would be looking for support from the large Indian community in England.

"We are lucky because it seems wherever we go we get a lot of support. In South Africa last year, especially in Durban, there were crowds of India supporters and I know that there is a huge Indian community in England too."

England captain Paul Collingwood said he was looking forward to what should be a thrilling tournament.

"Already, Twenty20 cricket is massive. It's great to play in it and from a player's point of view it is obviously a shortened form of the game but it is very intense and every single ball matters."

Webinfosys's Sports News : India open Asia Cup against Hong Kong

KARACHI, PTI: India launch their campaign in the Asia Cup cricket tournament against minnows Hong Kong here on Wednesday hoping to get into top form ahead of their crucial tie against archrival Pakistan on Thursday.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men should not face much resistance from Hong Kong, but the Indians are in no mood to take their opponents lightly in what is likely to be a one-sided floodlit contest at the National Stadium.

The Indians will go into the game without the services of paceman Irfan Pathan who will be rested because of a side strain.

But the Indians have enough bowling resources at their disposal to counter Hong Kong. The India coach Gary Kirsten warned his players not to get too complacent against their unfancied rivals.

"I am looking for some big contributions from my players in the match.

We will take every opposition seriously as this is the Asia Cup and we will play proper cricket and will do the things we need to do," Kirsten said।

Webinfosys's Sports News : Shaping the impossible dream

TNN: This is where it all began, some 7000 kilometres away from Lord's, at the Albion Sports Complex in Berbice, Guyana।

India won the 2nd ODI of the 1982-83 series against Clive Lloyd's all-conquering West Indians by 27 runs, earning precious self-belief in the bargain। The invincible Windies were conquered on home turf with an emphatic performance, and nothing seemed impossible heading into the World Cup.

The Windies won the toss, put India in, only to watch in horror as a Kapil Dev special set the tone for the Tunbridge Wells moment. His 38-ball 72, studded with 7 fours and 3 sixes, was more like a T20 hurricane, and Sunil Gavaskar at the top of the order contributed with a solid 90 off 117 - one of his finest ODI knocks - as India ran up a massive 282. Kapil was back in the thick of things when India took the field, catching Greenidge off his own bowling.

Backed by Madan Lal, Sandhu and Ravi Shastri, the Windies were restricted to 255 and India had made a significant psychological leap. It was their first ODI win over the Windies. Without Berbice, there wouldn't be a Lord's balcony moment in 1983.

"Berbice is memorable। It gave us that belief that we were not an ordinary One-day team. If the Windies could be beaten on their home ground, we could also beat them anywhere else."

Webinfosys's Sports News : Pakistan players gear up

KARACHI, AFP: Pakistan and Bangladesh both face minnows as the ninth Asia Cup begins on Tuesday, with the hosts hoping the event passes smoothly to pave the way for more international cricket in future.

Pakistan face Hong Kong in Karachi while Bangladesh play the United Arab Emirates in the first round. Defending champions Sri Lanka and India are the other teams in the six-nation event which runs until July 6.

The Asia Cup serves as a dress rehearsal for Pakistan's hosting of the eight-nation ICC (International Cricket Council) Champions Trophy in September. Several foreign teams, led by Australia who postponed a Test and One-Day tour to Pakistan in March-April this year, are considering a boycott of the Champions Trophy over safety concerns.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Pathan to miss match against Hong Kong

KARACHI: India have decided to rest all-rounder Irfan Pathan for their opening match of the Asia Cup against minnows Hong Kong on Wednesday as the Baroda pacer is yet to recover from a side strain.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said there is no major injury concern with Pathan but "it has been decided to give him some rest".

Pathan may play the second match on June 26 against hosts Pakistan.

The Indian team underwent a long and strenuous practice session under lights at the National stadium with Dhoni, who has indicated he will bat up the order, spending quite long time at the nets.

There were reports that Pathan has picked up a knee injury after the Kitply Cup last week but Dhoni said, "it was not serious and the left arm pacer just needed some rest".

Webinfosys's Sports News : Twenty20 real threat of international cricket: Survey

LONDON: Many of England players, who missed the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League, are ready to consider premature retirement from international cricket to play in the cash-rich Twenty20 competition, according to a survey conducted by the Professional Cricketers Association.

According to a website, a total of 334 cricketers, including 15 who represented England last winter, were questioned before the 2008 season and around half of the England stars said they would consider "retiring prematurely" for the IPL money.

"It is clear the new monies since the Indian leagues have unbalanced the cricketing landscape. It seems unlikely that any other competition around the cricketing world could put as much money on the table and create a competition of equal proportions in the near future," the PCA said.

"And therefore IPL will remain a threat, a force and an opportunity to the cricketing world for some time to come," it was quoted as saying by the website.

The survey, made public on Monday, was carried out before the recent announcement of a 50m series between England and a West Indies XI, backed by billionaire Sir Allen Stanford.

But the Stanford plan would not preclude England players from also pursuing IPL contracts, whenever their international commitments and county permit.

The survey also revealed that 45 per cent players would consider signing up for the ICL, even though it could result in a 12-month ban from county cricket, and 89 per cent believe "freedom of movement should prevail in regard to Indian cricket leagues".

However, 56 per cent agreed with the statement that "Twenty20 and its growing popularity threaten other forms of the game".

The PCA also expressed concerns about Twenty20 domination of cricket in its report which forms the background for the survey results.

"The current imbalance between remuneration for Twenty20 cricket and the longer forms of the game does present a very real threat to the existing fabric of the game," the report states.

"The financial rewards offered by the Indian leagues will entice players to retire early from county and international cricket - and senior players at that. The impact on the strength of our international sides would be huge.

"This would have the potential to significantly devalue our TV rights as well as reducing the attraction of English cricket to the fans."

The PCA recommends a gap in the international cricket schedule in March and April to prevent England players having to choose between their country and the financial attractions of the sub-continent.

The Twenty20 game, when it started out to be a bit of a fun is now going way over the top with "money" being the be all end all of everything.

Webinfosys's Sports News : We can win the Asia Cup: Dhoni

MUMBAI: With the disappointment of losing the tri-series final to Pakistan behind them, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday said his side would look to build solid partnerships in the middle overs to do well at the Asia Cup starting on June 24 in Pakistan.

"We have done well on the last tour to Pakistan (2006), but that's in the past and has no relevance now. I agree with Muthaiah Muralitharan's views (expressed recently that India were favourites) to the extent that if we play to our capabilities we can win the Asia Cup," the flamboyant wicket-keeper-batsman said before the team left for Karachi today.

"But we will have to be our best and I hope we can do it," he added.

Four-time champions India start their campaign in the six-team tournament, which concludes on July 6, with a match against minnows Hong Kong on June 24.

They take on hosts and archrivals Pakistan the next day at the National Stadium in what is billed as the revenge clash for Dhoni and his men, who were defeated by Shoaib Malik's team in Bangaldesh in the tri-series final on June 14.

The other three teams in the fray, in a different preliminary group, are Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and UAE.

Dhoni singled out the middle overs as the most crucial phase and said if the team can keep enough wickets in hand while going at a rate of 4.5 or 5 then even 100 runs are not impossible to get in the last 10 overs.

"We did well in the middle overs against Bangladesh and Pakistan in the league phase (in tri-series in Dhaka), but lost a few wickets in the final which put us under pressure (chasing Pakistan's 315)," the Indian limited overs captain said a pre-departure media conference.

Dhoni said despite the fact that Yusuf Pathan was given only four overs in Bangladesh, the team had the confidence that he can deliver the goods both with his off-breaks and bat.

"We have full confidence in not only his bowling but also batting. He has done well in first class cricket and in Challenger Series. In Bangladesh Virender Sehwag was turning the ball more on that pitch and was preferred. But we will give him (Pathan) enough opportunity", he said.

Coach Gary Kirsten gave the thumbs up to the young batsmen in the team by saying they were capable of carrying the burden on their shoulders in the absence of seniors (Sachin Tendulkar who is injured, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid who were not picked).

"We have an extremely talented group of players," said the former South African Test and ODI opener ahead of the departure of the squad.

Kirsten described the tournament as important for the coming season ahead. "It will be a good experience. It will be beneficial for the season ahead if we can win it. Our goal will be to win the tournament."

Asked about the 1983 World Cup victory by Kapil's Devils, who are being felicitated by the cricket board in Delhi, Dhoni said the triumph re-defined cricket in India.

"We see those moments at Lord's when they won the World Cup as a big motivation for us and a big achievement. We won the Twenty20 World Cup (last year in South Africa) and want to win the 50-over World Cup too," he said.

Dhoni was stumped when asked what he was doing when India won the World Cup 25 years ago. "I was drinking milk," he said, and then added with a smile "I was only two years old".

The team: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt), Yuvraj Singh (vice-capt), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, RP Singh, Ishant Sharma, Manpreet Singh Gony, Pragyan Ojha, Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Pakistan open Asia Cup with hopes for future

KARACHI, June 23: Pakistan and Bangladesh both face minnows as the ninth Asia Cup begins on Tuesday, with the hosts hoping the event passes smoothly to pave the way for more international cricket in future.

Pakistan has been hit by political upheaval and a wave of suicide bombings in the past year, which have claimed more than 1,000 lives, although the violence has tailed off in recent months.

However, if Pakistan stages the Asia Cup without any trouble then foreign teams will be left with little choice other than to take part in the ICC event.

The ICC last week gave Pakistan the all-clear for the September tournament but said it will continue to monitor the situation.

Pakistan, which is staging the Asia Cup for the first time since its inception in 1984, is confident of a positive start to the competition.

"We are confident that if we play tough cricket we can win the competition," said captain Shoaib Malik ahead of his team's Group B match, adding that the match against archrivals India on Thursday will be the key to reaching the final.

"We will take it match by match. First up is Hong Kong and we don't want any let ups in that match which we should win without any discomfort," said Malik.

Hong Kong's English coach Aftab Habib said his side would remember the Irish feat of upsetting Pakistan in the World Cup held in the Caribbean last year.

"Cricket is a funny game and we should remember there were lots of upsets in the 2007 World Cup so we must give it our best to upset Pakistan," said Habib, who played two Tests for England in 1999.

In Lahore, Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful is eyeing a spot in the second round with a win over the UAE.

"Our first target is to get a place in the second round so we should play quality cricket to beat the UAE and then focus on the bigger game against Sri Lanka," said Ashraful.

For UAE they have no choice but to try to upset Bangladesh. "We have prepared well for this competition and know that the only chance to reach the second round is to beat Bangladesh," said UAE captain Saqib Ali.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the super league where each side will play each other to decide the July 6 finalists.

Webinfosys's Sports News : BCCI promises more Twenty20 showbiz

NEW DELHI: Buoyed by the roaring success of Indian Premier League (IPL), Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday promised more Twenty20 showbiz that will keep the country's cricket lovers hooked on to television.

After IPL, the latest blockbuster from BCCI will be the Twenty20 Champions League to be hosted in India in late September this year and will feature top two domestic sides from India, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa and England.

The eight-day tournament will have a whopping prize purse of $10 million, double the amount given away in IPL.

The winners of the Champions League will take home $5 million, almost five times the amount of IPL champions Rajasthan Royals, who won $1.2 million. The runners-up will receive $2.5 million.

"There will be more sleepless nights for Indian cricket lovers," a beaming Lalit Modi, BCCI vice-president and IPL Chairman announced on Sunday.

"IPL was a huge success. More than 99 million of the 135 million TV viewers watched IPL. We could not have asked for more," Modi said.

Australia will be represented by Victoria and Western Australia, the winners and runners-up respectively of KFC T20 Big Bash.

The South African challenge will be spearheaded by Nashua Titana, who won the Standard Pro T20 league, and KwaZulu Natal Dolphins. England's domestic T20 tournament is being played while Pakistan's will have its tournament in August this year.

The IPL story is being emulated by other cricket boards as well and Texas Billionaire Allen Stanford has struck a deal with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to hosts a Twenty20 match between the two sides for five years for whopping $100 million.

Stanford is planning another tournament with four top cricketing nations.

"ECB and WICB are getting together for this Twenty20 event and it is for the good of the game," said Modi.

BCCI, in its working committee meeting Sunday, lauded Modi for his efforts in making IPL a great success.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Dhoni confident of winning Champions Trophy

DUBAI: India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is confident that his team will carry on the good form to win the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in September.

"The Indian team did very well in limited-overs cricket in 2007-08. Winning the One-day series in Australia was a monumental achievement. Not only did we beat the World Cup winners, but also Sri Lanka, which was runner-up in the Caribbean.

"We would like to continue in the same vein and take the Champions Trophy home with us to India," Dhoni said in a statement

Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik also said that his team, after lifting the Kitply Cup tri-series, is ready to give its best to win the tournament on home turf. Incidentally Pakistan defeated India to win the tri-series in Bangladesh.

"It is my dream to captain my country to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy on home soil and my team will be doing everything we can to convert this dream into reality," he said.

"I am sure that there will be a fantastic atmosphere for all the games and that the people of Pakistan will make it a happy and memorable event," he added.

Malik also said that defeating India last week showed that they are in a good form.

"I think this could be one of the most closely contested tournaments for a long time," he said.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Pakistan's Asif returns home after drug case dropped

KARACHI: Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif returned home early Friday after Dubai prosecutors dropped charges of possession of an illegal drug and ordered his deportation.

The 25-year-old fast bowler was held at Dubai airport on June 1 while returning home from a domestic tournament in India, and charged with possessing a small amount of opium.

But Dubai Public prosecutors dropped the case on Thursday citing "insignificance" and announced he would be deported to Pakistan.

Asif arrived at Karachi international airport on Friday morning, before being whisked to a domestic terminal for a flight to the eastern city of Lahore.

The Pakistan Cricket Board earlier welcomed the decision to drop the case, adding that it "is relieved that his ordeal is over."

"We appreciate the professional manner in which the whole issue was dealt with by the Dubai police, prosecution department and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities," it said in a statement.

"The drug tests conducted on Asif during the investigations in Dubai were clear and negative for any contraband substance," the statement said.

The PCB will conduct its own immediate inquiry into the case, once official records are received from UAE authorities, it said.

The Federal Investigation Authority in Pakistan said last week they will also deal with Asif under their rules and regulations.

Mohammad Al Nuaimi, the Dubai prosecutor who handled the charges, said on Thursday that the case "has been dropped against Mohammad Asif due to insignificance ..."

"It is definite that he committed the crime of smuggling and possessing 0.24 grams of opium as he was caught red-handed ... however in certain cases and for a faster litigation process the public prosecution drops a case due to insignificance and deports the suspect," he said, according to the online version of the local daily Gulf News.

Asif, a fast rising bowler, was also banned for one year after he and fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar tested positive for nandrolone in September 2006.

Akhtar was banned for two years however the punishments were later overturned on appeal.

Asif, who has claimed 51 wickets in 11 Test matches and 36 wickets in 31 One-Day Internationals, was dropped from the team after being initially named in the 16-man squad for the tri-series in Bangladesh.

Pakistan won the tri-series beating India by 25 runs in the June 14 final.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Pakistan axe keeper Akmal for Asia Cup

KARACHI: Pakistani selectors have dropped experienced wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal for the Asia Cup tournament, which starts next week.

Akmal was omitted from a list of 20 players picked to attend a short training camp, from which a 15-member squad will be named for the June 24-July 6 contest in Pakistan.

India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong are the other countries taking part.

Akmal, 26, has been axed after being ever-present since 2004 although he was rested for three One-day games last year in which the selectors tried out young keeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

"Kamran remains our number one keeper but we also wanted to give chances to others and we felt Kamran also deserved to take a well deserved rest," chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said.

Akmal who has played in 38 Tests and 88 One-dayers, has been told to get over a extended period of inconsistent form behind the stumps.

The final squad is due to be named on June 22.

The selectors had no other surprises for the tournament although pacer Mohammad Asif will not take part as he remains in detention in Dubai on suspicion of carrying illegal drugs.

Pakistan squad:

Shoaib Malik (Capt), Salman Butt, Nasir Jamshed, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfraz Ahmed, Shahid Afridi, Fawad Alam, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Rao Iftikhar, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Khan, Asad Rauf, Yasir Hameed, Bazid Khan, Mansoor Amjad, Naumanullah, Saeed Ajmal.

Webinfosys's Sports News : The divine Kapil knock that created history

Mystically Ours. This is not the name of a pedigreed racing horse but an equally divine knock that helped the Indian cricket team gallop towards the semi-finals of a World Cup, and beyond.

That innings belong to us, all of India, as it came from a man whose batting style was totally uncomplicated. He was skillful but carefree; he was sublime but error-prone. He was a leader and a rebel with an undying positive approach.

We always dreamt of playing knocks to that effect in galli cricket; but this man played it on the biggest stage: the World Cup.

And, to add to the mystic, that piece of gold remains a mystery even now as the match was never televised nor captured in video. Hence critics, players and Level III coaches can't dissect/analyse that knock and molest its immortality.

It's quite obvious that we are talking about Kapil Dev's 175 not out against Zimbabwe in a group game during the 1983 World Cup at Tunbridge Wells. Today (Wednesday) is the silver jubilee of that golden lining.

It's interesting to note that the venue (Nevill Ground) hasn't hosted a single ODI hence. That was the only ODI played at Kent's stadium which hosts 4,500 spectators. (Even the 1996 World Cup West Indies-Kenya match, part of history now, was played at an irregular venue like Pune.)

Fine, Kapil's knock came against lowly Zimbabwe and on a small ground. And opposite skipper Duncan Fletcher, who had starred in Zimbabwe's shock win over Australia in the same World Cup, could have made a mistake by removing successful bowlers (Rowson and Curran) out of the attack after their initial spells of 7-8 overs.

But the knock couldn't have come at a better moment. After all, a spot in the semis was at stake. India were reeling at 17-5 in this 60-over game before Kapil decided to take centrestage. And out of his 175, hundred came in boundaries (16x4s, 6x6s, 138 balls, 181 mins). And if memory has woken up from the right side of bed, there was also a ‘ran four' with Syed Kirmani.

Kapil and Kirmani had an unbeaten 126-run stand for the ninth wicket. It still remains the highest ninth wicket partnership in ODIs. Kirmani's 24 was the second-highest of the Indian innings. In the end, India posted 266 and won by 31 runs with Kapil sealing it with caught and bowled of last man John Traicos.

Kapil's 175 was an ODI record at that time which was broken by Viv Richards (189 not out at Manchester) in a 55-over game against England the following year. Saeed Anwar, the current record holder, bettered Richards with 194 against India in the Independence Cup of 1997 in fewer overs (50).

Kapil's 175 and India's first win over West Indies in West Indies (Berbice, 1983) gave India amazing belief which culminated into numerous One-day triumphs in the mid-'80s. Until Javed Miandad shattered that belief in Sharjah with a last-ball six in April 1986.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Rain brings end to Edgbaston One-dayer

BIRMINGHAM: The second One-Day International between England and New Zealand ended in a no result at Edgbaston on Wednesday after rain prevented a finish.

New Zealand were set 160 from 23 overs according to the Duckworth-Lewis calculation used in weather-shortened games, altered from 165 from 24 because of continued rain afer England were 162 all out in their 24-over allotment.

New Zealand had reached 127 for two after 19 overs when the umpires -- England's Ian Gould and Australian Steve Davis -- took the players off the field due to steady rain.

There has to be 20 overs bowled to decide the match with New Zealand required to reach 134 for two after 20 overs. England captain Paul Collingwood, unbeaten New Zealand batsmen Brendon McCullum (on 60 off 51 balls) and Scott Styris (19) appeared frustrated when they were told to leave the field.

McCullum's innings was his 13th One-Day International fifty while England took more than an hour to bowl their first 14 overs.

Earlier, debutant Grant Elliott claimed three wickets to restrict England. The medium-pacer took three for 23 from his five overs after being called up from English club cricket this week following a hamstring injury to Jacob Oram.

Opener Luke Wright top scored for England with 53 from 38 balls after New Zealand won the toss in murky and damp conditions and elected to bowl.

The Kiwis trail 1-0 in the five-match series after England took the lead with a comfortable 114-run win at Durham on Sunday.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Kapil's memorabilia is well preserved: PCA

MOHALI: After a stinging letter from Kapil Dev in the wake of the removal of his mural, the Punjab Cricket Associaciation (PCA) on Wednesday offered to placate the former captain by offering to restore the cut-out at the stadium.

Miffed after his mural was brought down, a hurt Kapil Dev shot off an e-mail to the PCA asking them to return him all his memorabilia if they cannot preserve them.

PCA secretary MP Pandove, however, said that the association, in its reply to the sulking former captain, had assured Kapil that his mural would soon be back where it was. Pandove also said that all his memorabilia and gifts were being "properly preserved in most befitting manner."

"We have full respect for Kapil Dev and all his memorabilia and gifts are well preserved," Pandove said, insisting "it has nothing to do with Kapil joining the (rebel) Indian Cricket League."

"The mural was removed as the construction work is going on and after the rainy season Kapil's cut out will be back at its original place," Pandove said.

And to clear the air, Pandove, also the BCCI joint secretary, said he would talk to the legendary all-rounder.

"I will speak to Kapil as well and remove all apprehensions in his mind. We have full respect for him," he said.

Kapil also appeared satisfied with the PCA's explanation and said the purpose of sending the e-mail was to clear certain doubts in his mind.

Earlier, Kapil had written an e-mail saying that "if the PCA is not willing to preserve and finds it difficult to keep those items or ever think of throwing them out in that case I can preserve them," Kapil said in his letter.

"I came to know through media reports that PCA has removed my portrait from the PCA ground at Mohali. I am concerned about the personal gifts and memorabilia of my cricketing years and also that of 1983 World Cup cricket tournament given to me by the PCA which are kept at various places at the Mohali stadium.

"I apprehend that now the PCA may not like to preserve the memorablia. I will be grateful if the same is returned to me so that I can preserve them," he said.

Kapil, however, sounded mellowed down later and said all he wanted was to preserve the memorabilia and PCA can keep the memorabilia if they want to preserve them.

"I never asked them to return (those memorabilia). I said 'if you wish not to keep my stuff, give it back to me, rather than throwing it into the dustbin', so that I can preserve those," Kapil said a news channel.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Angry Kapil takes on BCCI

NEW DELHI: All is not well between the Board of Cricket Control in India and veteran cricketer Kapil Dev. Two weeks after his poster was removed from the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali, former Indian skipper Kapil Dev wrote to the Punjab Cricket Association secretary, MP Pandove, asking the association to return his 'gifts and memorabilia'.

An e-mail and letter sent by Kapil to the Punjab Cricket Association states, "I came to know through media reports that Punjab Cricket Association has removed my portrait from the Punjab Cricket Association ground at Mohali, for some unknown reasons. Well, it’s your decision and you are free to do whatever you want."

The letter added, "I am concerned about the personal gifts and memorabilia of my cricketing years and also that of the 1983 World Cup cricket tournament, given by me to the Punjab Cricket Association, which are kept at various places at the Mohali ground. I apprehend that now the Punjab Cricket Association may not like to preserve the memorabilia mentioned above any more. I will be really be grateful if the same is returned to me so that I can preserve them since I have personal attachments and I am emotionally attached with all such items, which were used by me personally throughout my cricketing years."

"Therefore, if you are not at all willing to preserve and find it difficult to keep those items or ever think of throwing them out in that case I would really be grateful if the same is returned to me so that I can preserve them. Please do not take it otherwise, it’s only my feelings, emotions and attachments with my things which are so dear to me, " read the letter.

When the poster controversy took place a few days earlier, president of the Punjab Cricket Association, IS Bindra evaded the issue saying that the poster had fallen down due to the wind. He said, "Kapil's poster has been removed from its place. A new extension has been constructed at the PCA Stadium, and we’re just looking for an appropriate place to put up his poster there. As soon as we find a place, we will place it."

Kapil’s alliance with the rebel Indian Cricket League, of which he is the chairman, led to the BCCI sacking him from the National Cricket Academy, stopping his pension, and then stripping his poster from the Mohali stadium.

Webinfosys's Sports News : MCC committee approve Pietersen switch hitting

LONDON: The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) approved on Tuesday the switch-hitting technique used by England batsman Kevin Pietersen to hit two sixes on Sunday's One-day international against New Zealand.

Pietersen changed his stance and grip twice from right-hander to left-hander to hit two balls off Scott Styris over the boundary.

"MCC believes that the 'switch-hit' stroke is exciting for the game of cricket," a statement said. "Indeed, the stroke conforms to the laws of cricket and will not be legislated against."

The MCC, which acts as the custodian of cricket's laws, was asked by the International Cricket Council to discuss Pietersen's revolutionary tactics at a meeting on Tuesd

Webinfosys's Sports News :Ranatunga fears for the well-being of game after T20

MUMBAI: Arjuna Ranatunga is rated as one of the finest cricket captains of all time and now, wearing an administrator's hat, the Sri Lankan is worried about the well-being of the game in the era of Twenty20 razzmatazz.

"It needs only eleven mucks to win Twenty20 games. Even in ODI cricket you need seven to eight intelligent players and a captain while in T20 you need only power-hitters. You don't even need a good captain," he said.

Although the Twenty20 revolution has brought in unimaginable amount of money into the game, especially to the players with the introduction of the billion-dollar Indian Premier League, Ranatunga said he was concerned about the game.

"I agree players were underpaid and deserved to get more. But tell me, is T20 good for the game? My concern is more for the game. I'm afraid that in future everyone would like to become only batsmen and there won't be many willing to take up bowling," said the left-hander who represented his country in 93 Tests and 269 ODIs between 1992 and 2000.

Ranatunga, who led Lanka to the 1996 World Cup triumph with his imaginative captaincy and management skills, pointed out the examples of cricket greats Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid to prove his point about his harsh views on T20 cricket.

"Sachin Tendulkar is a great player, the finest batsman I have seen. But it was sad to see him try to change his game to suit the needs of Twenty20 cricket (during his stint as captain of Mumbai Indians in IPL). So was the case with Rahul Dravid, another great player," said the scorer of over 12,500 run in international cricket.

Ranatunga also expressed concerns that Twenty20 cricket would affect the longevity of players in the international game.

"I played for 20 years. But I am concerned for someone like Mahela (Jayawardene, the Lanka captain) who may not be able to last even 15 years (after the advent of T20)," he said.

"I'm happy I played cricket at the right time," he said.

The former Lankan captain, however, was happy to see the embattled West Indies benefit from the Twenty20 cash bonanza that is on offer in the much-anticipated series between England and a combined West Indies XI.

"I am, however, happy that the West Indies (cricket board) are to benefit from these matches. West Indies have suffered the most," he said.

He was also concerned about the demands from some players that a window should be carved out in the ICC's Future Tours Programme for events like the IPL (which lasted for 44 days) as he felt there would be very little time left in the calendar year for holding Tests and ODIs with more and more countries unfolding T20 league.

"England will want it, Pakistan have demanded it and others might also follow," he pointed out.

On the upcoming India-Sri Lanka series featuring three Tests and five ODIs in July-August, Ranatunga, hoped rains would stay away.

"I hope it doesn't rain during the series because the weather patterns have changed all over the world," he said.

Ranatunga also advocated an inter-schools contest between the two countries for development of junior level cricket.

"Both India and Sri Lanka have strong junior cricket set-ups. I would like a contest between the schools of the two countries which would be beneficial for development of junior level cricket in both the countries," he said.

Webinfosys's Sports News :No legal hurdle in contesting CAB polls: Dalmiya

KOLKATA: Former ICC President Jagmohan Dalmiya on Monday made his intention clear to contest the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) elections, saying there were no legal hurdles for him.

A Mumbai court on Monday deferred the case, which was filed by BCCI against him for allegedly misappropriating Rs 29 million from the PILCOM funds, to December 19.

Dalmiya thinks the case was not an impediment for him to contest against incumbent CAB president Prasun Mukherjee in the elections scheduled for next month.

"That was a regular course of hearing. The hurdle was never there. If you have any information that the court ruling was any a roadblock (in contesting CAB polls) it's false and fictitious," he insisted.

"The case did not have any merit. He (Dalmiya) is free to contest poll even if he had a case pending, there will be no legal hurdle," a Dalmiya aide said.

He went on to add even Lalu Prasad and L K Advani have many case pending against them..."Don't they contest in polls?" he asked.

Dalmiya was at the helm of CAB for 13 years at a stretch before relinquishing in December 2006.

The incumbent CAB President Prasun Mukherjee, who lost to Dalmiya in a high-voltage election in 2006, was unanimously elected to the top post in the February 2007 election.

Known as a master negotiator, Dalmiya was the first Asian chief of the ICC (1997-2000) before becoming Secretary of the BCCI (1993-1996) and then as President (2001-2005).

Having ousted by the Union minister Sharad Pawar in the January 2006 BCCI polls, Dalmiya was expelled from the Board for alleged misappropriation of funds.

Webinfosys's Sports News :MCC to discuss Pietersen's switch hitting

LONDON, June 16: The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) will discuss on Tuesday England batsman Kevin Pietersen's spectacular switch-hitting in a One-Day International against New Zealand on Sunday.

The right-handed Pietersen twice changed grips and switched to a left-hander's stance against Scott Styris, pulling both deliveries for six. Some commentators said he had taken an unfair advantage because bowlers have to notify a batsman if they decide to bowl with the other arm.

A spokeswoman for the MCC, the custodian of cricket's laws, said Pietersen's revolutionary tactics would be discussed on Tuesday at the request of the International Cricket Council (ICC). "Tomorrow our secretary Keith Bradshaw, our head of cricket John Stephenson and other committee members will be having a meeting and one of the things they are going to be discussing is Kevin Pietersen's shot as the MCC have been asked to look at it by the ICC," she said.

"The shot has generated quite a lot of interest but we won't be making any further comment until after that meeting on Tuesday." Pietersen, who reverse-swept a six two years ago off Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan using the conventional right-hander's grip, defended the innovation after his unbeaten 110 had set up a 114-run win over the Kiwis.

"Everybody wants brand new ideas, new inventions and new shots. That is a new shot played today and people should be saying it's a new way to go," he said. "There are new things happening for cricket at the moment and people shouldn't be criticising it all the time."

Webinfosys's Sports News :West Indies battle but face another defeat

BRIDGETOWN: West Indies put up a brave fight against Australia on the fourth day of the third Test on Sunday but, despite a spirited 85 from Xavier Marshall, still needed 240 runs for victory with seven wickets remaining.

The touring side, seeking to complete a 2-0 series victory, declared at 439 for five at lunch, setting the hosts a winning target of 475.

In two sessions they picked up the wickets of skipper Chris Gayle, Marshall and Ramnaresh Sarwan and in practice need only six more wickets to win with West Indies closing on 235 for three.

Opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon suffered a bad ankle injury on Saturday and can only walk with the help of a stick so is unlikely to bat.

The prolific Shivnarine Chanderpaul (27), unbeaten in his last three innings, and all-rounder Dwayne Bravo (30) survived through to the close.

Although the target is not excessive on a wicket which is still playing well, there is little proven batting ability below Denesh Ramdin at number six.

West Indies would also need to break their own record of 418, the highest fourth-innings total to win a Test match set in Antigua against Australia in 2003.

"Anything can happen in cricket, but I certainly love being in our position," Australian spinner Beau Casson said.

"We've got a lot of options, which is a fantastic position to be in. It's going to be a good game, a good Test for us, but we're up to it," he said.

Marshall said West Indies were still confident of pulling off an unlikely win.

"The guys will have to come out positive," he said. "I think the first few overs will be important. We need to stick them out and take it from there. We always believe."

There was no indication that the home side were battening down the hatches to play for a draw when opening pair of Marshall and Gayle rode their luck to score 50 inside 11 overs.

WOEFUL SHOT

Marshall was dropped by Simon Katich in the slips off Brett Lee, Casson dropped Gayle and wicket-keeper Brad Haddin failed to hold on to an edge from Marshall.

Gayle was also close to being run out but his good fortune ended when he holed out to Lee off Stuart Clark, a woeful shot from the skipper who dragged a ball from outside off stump over to mid-on.

Sarwan made 43 before he was trapped lbw by the left-arm spin of Michael Clarke, ending a 95-run partnership with Marshall.

Jamaican Marshall, in the Test side despite never having made a first-class century, showed a great range of shots and impressive confidence as he took the attack to the Australians.

But with his maiden ton in sight, Marshall was brilliantly caught by Phil Jaques at short-leg to give debutant spinner Casson his first Test wicket.

Australia's morning session was enough to give them a massive lead after they had dominated Saturday's play.

The tourists lost century-maker Katich early after the left-hander added just nine runs to his overnight score of 148.

Sulieman Benn finally got rid off Katich after 488 minutes at the crease, for 157, with substitute Darren Sammy taking a catch at short extra-cover.

Benn struck again to get rid of Andrew Symonds for two, the all-rounder driving a well-flighted delivery to Chanderpaul at cover.

But Clarke (48) and Haddin (45) continued the Australian advance, adding 79 before lunch.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Pietersen century lays platform for England victory

CHESTER-LE-STREET (England): Kevin Pietersen's unbeaten 110 was the cornerstone of England's 114 run thrashing of New Zealand in the first One-Day International at the Riverside on Sunday which saw them go 1-0 up in the five-match series.

Pietersen's sixth hundred in 72 One-Day Internationals matches guided England to 307 for five and was his first century at this level since his 104 against Australia at the World Cup in Antigua last year.

World Cup semi-finalists New Zealand, chasing 308 to win, were bowled out for 193 with more than seven overs remaining as they lost only their second match in nine 50 overs per side contests.

South Africa-born Pietersen, who on Friday made 42 not out in England's nine-wicket Twenty20 thrashing of New Zealand at Old Trafford, was in total command and at times appeared to be toying with the bowling.

The 27-year-old faced 113 balls with three sixes - two of them outrageous reverse sweeps off medium-pacer Scott Styris - and eight fours.

Together with England One-day captain Paul Collingwood, who made a run-a-ball 64 in front of his Durham home crowd, he put on 136 for the fourth wicket after England had wobbled at 95 for three.

Owais Shah ensured the runs kept coming with a dashing 49 off 25 balls with three sixes and fours fours.

Shah added 73 in just 35 deliveries with Pietersen. Ian Bell, retained as on opener after his man-of-the-match winning 60 on Friday, again provided the innings with a solid foundation before he was run out for 46 by Ross Taylor's direct hit from mid-wicket.

New Zealand's reply got off to a rapid start with openers Jamie How and Brendon McCullum putting on 50 inside eight overs.

But third seamer Stuart Broad, with his first ball, had McCullum, on 36, cutting a short delivery straight to Bell at extra-cover.

And New Zealand were soon 72 for three. Collingwood, England's best fielder, ran out James Marshall with a direct hit from backward point on the bowler's end stumps before how spooned a catch to Wright in the covers off Broad.

From then on New Zealand never looked like mounting a recovery and medium-pacer Collingwood wrapped up the match with four for 15 in 17 balls.

New Zealand came into this match ranked third in the world in 50-over cricket and with a 3-1 series win over England on home soil in February to their credit.

But without accurate pace bowler Jacob Oram, who could miss the whole series with a hamstring injury, their seamers struggled to keep the runs down with England adding 109 in the last 10 overs.

Styris's eight cost an expensive 63 runs while teenage quick Tim Southee, fit after an ankle sprain, conceded 68 in 10.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori, who won the toss, did exert some control with one for 38 in 10 overs of left-arm spin, dismissing Collingwood when his rival skipper chopped on to his stumps.

But any hopes New Zealand, beaten 2-0 in a Test series by England earlier this month, had of stalling the run-rate were dashed by the dynamic Shah.

The Middlesex batsman never let up, striking Southee for a straight six in the last over, before he holed out in sight of a fifty.

The series continues at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Verdict in Asif case in another 10-12 days:

KARACHI: The Attorney General in Dubai took up the Mohammad Asif detention case on Sunday but Pakistan embassy officials did not see a verdict coming before another 10 to 12 days.

An official in the Pakistan embassy in Dubai said the Attorney General went through the medical reports of Asif and the report of the public prosecutor on the case on Sunday.

"He (the Attorney General) will first see the evidence and reports and question the prosecution. After which Asif would be called for questioning as would other defendents," the official said requesting anonymity.

"I don't think the Attorney General is going to decide before 10 days whether he will charge Asif or release and deport him. That is the procedure in Dubai and that is how long it takes for a case to be processed," he said.

Asif has been in detention since June 1 when he was caught with contraband drugs at Dubai airport on his way back home from India after playing in the Indian Premier League.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has said it would hold its own internal inquiry once Asif returns home but refused to comment any further on the issue insisting they still didn't know all the facts of the incident.

"But our lawyers in Dubai are in constant touch with the prosecutor's office and keeping tab of everything. It is not as if we have abandoned Asif in Dubai," one PCB official said.

The embassy official said the consulate was also keeping a watch on the proceedings and an official had also met with Asif in detention.

"Asif was a bit down when I last spoke to him but we have cheered him up and told him this will be over soon," one Board official said.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Exuberant Team India

Though India will go into the final of the tri-series against Pakistan on Saturday as overwhelming favourites, they cannot make the mistake of taking Pakistan lightly as history shows that they have fought back fiercely when they were pushed to the wall.

An India-Pakistan title clash is a mouthwatering contest for cricket fans in the subcontinent, but India's success in Australia and their complete domination in the current series makes them look invincible even before a ball is bowled in the final.

India ended Pakistan's 12-match winning streak, handing them a crushing 140-run defeat in the league match earlier in the week.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Chanderpaul carries bat for third innings

Shivnarine Chanderpaul carried his bat for the third consecutive innings but once again lacked support from his team mates as West Indies were dismissed for 216 on the second day of the third Test on Friday.

Although Chanderpaul compiled 79 not out Australia, who are 1-0 up in the three-match series, still took a first innings lead of 35 runs with left-arm pace bowler Mitchell Johnson capturing four for 41.

Left-hander Chanderpaul has scored two centuries against the Australians and only once in fiveinnings has he failed to make at least a half century. He has scored 392 runs so far in the series for an average of 196.

The Australians added just 25 runs to their overnight 226 for seven but Ricky Ponting's side soon bounced back with the ball. Brett Lee removed both openers, captain Chris Gayle (14) along with opener Sewnarine Chattergoon (6) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (20) was a victim of Stuart Clark before lunch, caught brilliantly by Mike Hussey at backward point.

After the interval, Xavier Marshall continued to a lively 39 before he went caught by debutant Beau Casson off Andrew Symonds, a soft dismissal for a batsman who had looked settled.

Chanderpaul and Bravo consolidated, putting on 60 for the fifth wicket before Bravo once again failed to build on a solid start. The Trinidad all-rounder had made 29 before he was caught behind, flicking a leg-side delivery from Johnson.

Then came the by now traditional lower order collapse. Denish Ramdin, Sulieman Benn, Jerome Taylor, Daren Powell, and Fidel Edwards all went without reaching double figures as the last five wickets fell for just 28 runs.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Ashraf defends scathing e-mail to Pak team manager

KARACHI: Although embarrassed after his stinging e-mail castigating the Pakistan team appeared in newspapers, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Nasim Ashraf defended shooting off the strongly-worded letter, saying it was his duty to point out the ills that plague the side.

Insisting that the mail was not meant to demoralise the team after the pounding they received against India, Ashraf said, "As the board Chairman, it is my job to point out some glaring mistakes that were obvious in the match and the mail was meant to lift up the spirits of the players."

Before leaving for Bangladesh to watch the final of the tri-series, Ashraf said team manager Talat Ali had responded by assuring him that the team management was taking corrective measures to ensure the team played well on Saturday.

Talat himself defended the mail from the board chairman in Dhaka saying it was nothing unusual and the head of the PCB normally exchanged mails and views with him and this was his right.

"As President of the board he has every right to guide us," Talat said.

Ashraf reached Dhaka this afternoon and immediately went into a meeting with captain Shoaib Malik and Talat although it was not confirmed if coach Geoff Lawson was also attending the meeting.

The chairman's mail was leaked out in the media on Friday and former Test player Saleem Altaf was removed from the Board on charges of leaking it to the media.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Dhoni going for the kill

DHAKA, IANS: After their massive victory over Pakistan, the Indian team should have it easy against Bangladesh in their last league game in the tri-series here Thursday.

For the Indians the match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur should be a good practice for Saturday's final. In the unlikely event of a big Bangladesh victory, Pakistan could be in danger of missing the final, the hosts joining the Indians by virtue of better quotient.

Any doubts of India taking the match lightly were dispelled by skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni who indicated that his side would take the match seriously.

"We got to win every match. In fact, it is not about winning and losing, it is all about going out there and playing to your potential," Dhoni said.

"Everybody wants to win. It was a good game of cricket against Pakistan on Tuesday. Hopefully rain will not interfere on Thursday," Dhoni said.

Webinfosys's Sports News : The decisive goal

Arda Turan ended Switzerland's interest in Euro 2008 in heartbreaking fashion as a last-minute breakaway goal gave Turkey a 2-1 win here on Wednesday.

Just as it seemed the co-hosts had done enough to stay alive in the competition, the midfielder broke clear on the left, cut inside and beat goalkeeper Diego Benaglio from the edge of the area with the help of a cruel deflection off the boot of centreback Patrick Muller.

It was harsh on the Swiss but they had only themselves to blame having squandered the chances to kill off the Turks long before the dramatic denouement.

Hakan Yakin, one of three players in the Swiss side with family roots in Turkey, had given Jakob Kuhn's side a first-half lead in treacherous conditions.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Glorious victory

BERNE, AFP: Holland's 30-year wait for a victory over Italy ended in glorious fashion here on Wednesday as Marco van Basten's side rampaged their way to a 3-0 defeat of the world champions.

A clearly offside goal from Ruud van Nistelrooy may have kickstarted the rout but there was no doubt that the Dutch, superior in every area, fully deserved a victory that was completed by Wesley Sneijder's close-range strike and a late breakaway goal by the outstanding Gio van Bronckhorst.

Uncharacteristically shaky in defence, the Italians were given a painful reminder of the importance of their World Cup captain Fabio Cannavaro, who was ruled out of the tournament after suffering an ankle injury in training last week.

NEUSTIFT (Austria), June 10: Russia will have to overcome some key injuries and hold off the potent attack of Group D favourite Spain or risk seeing their European Championship campaign derailed from the start.

Russia coach Guus Hiddink has never failed to lead his team out of the group phase at the World Cup - the Netherlands in 1998, South Korea in 2002 and Australia two years ago in Germany. At his only previous European Championship, he led the Netherlands to the quarterfinals, where they lost to France on penalties. The Dutchman will have to extend his streak without his two key playmakers - the injured Pavel Pogrebnyak and the suspended Andrei Arshavin. Pogrebnyak, who scored 10 goals in Zenit St Petersburg’s run to the UEFA Cup title, was ruled out of Tuesday’s match at the Tivoli Neu stadium in Innsbruck with a left knee injury.

Arshavin will also miss the next match against Greece due to suspension. "They are two players who can make the difference if a game is hanging in the balance, they’ve proved that at European level. It’s like losing blood, a lot of blood,’’ Hiddink said. "I could keep complaining about it and using it as an excuse, but no, the players are the ones who have to solve the problem - show that everybody is replaceable.’’

Pogrebnyak’s absence means Roman Pavlyuchanko should return to the lineup. The Spartak Moscow striker went a long way to helping the team qualify for Euro 2008 when he came off the bench and scored two second-half goals as Russia rallied from a goal down to beat England in Moscow last October.

Sergei Semak, who had fallen out of favour with Hiddink only to be called back from a two-year hiatus, is expected to be captain after playing a key role in FC Rubin Kazan’s surprise run to the top of the Russian league this season.

"Of course Spain are favourite not only in our group but in the whole championship,’’ Semak said. "But we can play good football too and if we play at our best we can win. "La Furia Roja’’ (The Red Fury) hasn’t lifted a major championship trophy since they beat the Soviet Union in the Euro 1964 final at home. Living up to the expectations has always been a problem for Spain, who know they must take advantage of a depleted Russia squad. With Fernando Torres and David Villa - who combined for 56 goals this season - leading the attack, there is little reason Spain should emerge without a victory.

"If we all work hard, there is no reason to think we’ll lose here,’’ Spain coach Luis Aragones said. "Villa and Torres are very quick and possess a lot of quality and can score. It’ll be difficult for Spain to go one game without scoring.’’ Torres is already a marked man. "Of course we have special plans for Torres, but I’m not going to discuss them here,’’ Russia assistant coach Igor Korneev said. "He is a great player, but you mustn’t forget their other players too who are capable of winning a game at any moment. It’s not just Torres.’’ Villa is one of those. The Valencia striker was the standout player in Spain’s 2-1 warm-up win over Peru and has a better scoring rate than Torres at the international level - 14 goals in 31 games compared to Torres’ 15 in 49.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Upton happy with players' commitment

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his teammates wasted precious little time after their arrival here as the entire squad sweated it out for about three hours, which convinced their trainer and mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton who said that there was no lack of commitment in the side.

Soon after their arrival from Kolkata, the Indian side headed for the indoor facilities at the Sher-e-Bangla national stadium here this evening for some fine-tuning.

Making the best use of the available facilities in a cramped indoor arena with three pitches for close to three hours under the supervision of coach Gary Kirsten, bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad and fielding coach Robin Singh, the team members had a rigorous workout.

At the end of the strenuous session, Upton, said they could not do much about the conditions and had to be satisfied with whatever was offered to them.

"It is a bit early to assess the fitness of the players. But they have shown commitment, that is important," he said.

Though he is yet to assess all the players in the side, Upton believes having the same person looking after both the physical and mental aspects of the players would help the side.

"What happened earlier was that the players finished physical training, then they went to somebody who did the mental side of them. But in cricket, both physical and mental aspects go side by side," he said.

"Whatever time I had during the Test series was enough to know what the players want. But the more time I spend with them, the better I will be able to judge the players.

"We are all learning, such is life. I have to find out what is going to work for the players, what their needs are, what the team wants and then execute plans that best suit them", Upton said.

He said all the players were eager to play for the country after turning out for different teams in the just-concluded Indian Premier League.

"A cricketer's lifestyle is very, very busy and he understands that he has to give his best. They are professionals and must be able to adapt from Twenty20 to One-dayers to Tests. The top teams are those who are going to adapt quickly," he said.

Earlier, Indian team arrived to a heavy drizzle from Kolkata where they stayed overnight. Punjab pacer Manpreet Singh Goni, a last-minute replacement for injured S Sreesanth, is expected to join the squad on Monday.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Sreesanth doubtful for Bangladesh tri-series

A side strain sustained in the Indian Premier League has rendered S Sreesanth doubtful for the tri-series in Bangladesh and the spunky pacer was on Friday advised to see the medical team at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said in a statement that Sreesanth sustained the injury during the May 28 Kings XI Punjab vs Rajasthan Royals match at Mohali.

"Sreesanth has got a left side strain from the last IPL game at Mohali. This is confirmed by MRI scans and currently he still has some effusion in the region. Sreesanth is planned to join the Indian team for the Bangladesh tour tomorrow," Shah said.

The pacer is now in Bangalore being assessed by the medical team at the NCA.

"At present, he looks doubtful for the Bangladesh tour. His availability for the Bangladesh tour will be decided after his assessment at the NCA," Shah said.

Top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland will play triple defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain in the French Open final on Sunday.

Federer won through with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win over unseeded Gael Monfils of France.

Second seed Nadal earlier had beaten Serbian third seed Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).

Webinfosys's Sports News :Nadal can fall, says Federer

Roger Federer believes he has the ability to finally wear down Rafael Nadal and win the French Open in Paris on Sunday.

It will be the third straight year that Federer and Nadal have met in the final at Roland Garros with Nadal winning the previous two. Nadal also defeated Federer in the 2005 semi-finals.

Federer though will be going for his 13th career Grand Slam title, one short of the record of 14 held by Pete Sampras.

"I think maybe three years ago when I played him the first time, in the semi-final, I guess I just came in and I thought I could blow him off the court," Federer said.

"I really felt like I had the game. I was very close. I was up a break in the fourth to push it to the fifth set, so it was close, after all."

"I think over all the years I've been able to improve. That gives me more variety, gives me more opportunities, and I have been able to vary more with my tactics", he added.

On the evidence of Friday's semi-finals though, Nadal will start Sunday's final a hotter favourite than ever.

He pounded third seed Novak Djokovic, defeating the Australian Open champion 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3), while Federer blew hot and cold against unseeded Frenchman Gael Monfils before scraping through 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

The Swiss maestro watched most of the first semi-final on television before he took to the court to take on Monfils and he agree that Nadal's tennis had been at times "sublime" and presented him with the "ultimate test on clay."

"He hasn't had any problems whatsoever. It isn't like he's not been improving and I think it's great what's happenings in the game," he said.

"We have the same guys always at the very top, and we are testing each other over and over again. I think it's very entertaining. I believe very strongly that this is my year. I did the hard work so far, but I think the toughest test is yet to come."

Just how tough is borne out by the statistics. The two have played nine times on clay in their 16 career games and Federer has won only once - in the final of the Hamburg Masters Series tournament last year.

That sole win gives the ever-optimistic Federer hope. "I like this challenge, playing against him on clay, and I really am in a position to win," he said.

"I'm the only player who managed to win against him on clay, and I hope I'm going to do that again on Sunday."
