Sehwag smashed a 95-ball 119 and Suresh Raina hit a 68-ball 84 during their 198-run second wicket stand to help India overhaul Pakistan's 299-4 with 7.5 overs to spare.

Earlier, Shoaib Malik hit his first century as captain to help Pakistan post a challenging target.

However, it proved a cake walk for India who were indebted to some lusty batting by Sehwag and Raina as the duo tore apart the home bowling, which lost its bite after frontline paceman Umar Gul broke down with a side strain.

LAHORE (Pakistan), AFP: Unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis took a career-best 5-22 to help Sri Lanka overcome a fighting United Arab Emirates by 142 runs in the final Group A match played at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Thursday.

Mendis triggered a collapse in the UAE batting ranks as the qualifiers lost eight wickets for 41 runs to slump from a threatening 107-2 to be bowled out for 148 in 36.3 overs chasing Sri Lanka's 290-9.

For the UAE left-handed opener Amjad Ali top scored with a brilliant 79-ball 77 but once the Lahore-born batsman fell, wickets tumbled like nine pins with Mendis running through the middle and lower order with his beguiling action.

LONDON: England One-day captain Paul Collingwood was banned for four matches on Thursday after his side failed to bowl their overs in the required time in Wednesday's One-Day International against New Zealand.

A statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC) said Collingwood would miss the fifth and final match against New Zealand at Lord's on Saturday.

He will also be suspended from a One-day match against Scotland on August 18, a Twenty20 match against South Africa and the first One-Day International against the Proteas.

The ICC said Collingwood was banned because Wednesday's offence was his team's second within a year.

Collingwood was fined 50 percent of his match fee when England fell short of the required over rate in a One-Day International against India on August 24 last year.

The suspension completes a miserable two days for Collingwood who admitted on Wednesday he had been wrong not to recall New Zealand batsman Grant Elliott who was run out after a collision with bowler Ryan Sidebottom.

Although New Zealand won the game off the last ball, the Kiwi team were incensed and captain Daniel Vettori refused to shake Collingwood's hand after the match.

Vettori, whose team take an unbeatable 2-1 lead into the Lord's match, later accepted an apology from Collingwood at the post-match victory ceremony.

KARACHI, AFP: Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina hit aggressive hundreds to lead India to a huge 256-run win over Hong Kong in their Asia Cup Group B match here on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Raina compiled a 68-ball 101 for his maiden century while Dhoni notched an unbeaten 96-ball 109 as both shared a rapid-fire 166-run fourth wicket stand to shot India to the highest Asia Cup total of 374-4.

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla then spun Hong Kong with figures of 4-23 as the minnows were bundled out for a paltry 118 in 36.5 overs.

India meet Pakistan on Thursday to decide who tops the Group. Pakistan beat Hong Kong by 155 runs.

KARACHI, PTI: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is happy with his team carving out an easy win against Hong Kong in Asia Cup league match but says the match against Pakistan would be an altogether different game on Wednesday.

"It was a good game to start the tournament. The start was perfect by Viru and Gambhir. They gave us the start we were looking for and then Raina batted well," Dhoni said after a comprehensive 256-run win.

Dhoni, who himself scored a hundred, said Pakistan are doing well these days and it would be tough a match against the archrivals.

"It is good to play when they are at their best. They know the conditions well and the wicket is also not easy. It is difficult to rotate the strike. If bowlers get early wickets it would be difficult to score," he said.

LONDON: The members of the 1983 World Cup-winning India cricket team on Wednesday marked 25 years since their historic victory over the West Indies, their lone triumph in the tournament.

Captain Kapil Dev's 14-man squad attended a private function in the pavilion at Lord's, followed by a gala dinner, a quarter century to the day since their stunning upset over Clive Lloyd's powerhouse side at the ground.

"It changed our lives," said the skipper, who described the win as "a very important day in Indian history".

"In our country there is no other sport in people's minds or anybody's mind," he added.

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar, an opening batsman in the final, said that the entire team "feel very special about the moment, that we were part of India's cricketing history".

Despite entering the final as underdogs, and managing to set the West Indies a target of just 183 after batting first, India denied their opponents a hat-trick of World Cup titles with a 43-run win.

Dev paid tribute to the West Indies team that India defeated, describing them as "really rich in every sense" while team member Ravi Shastri joked that the "25th of June doesn't exist in the West Indies calendar".

After posing for photographs and speaking to journalists, the team members gathered to once again hoist aloft the 1983 World Cup trophy, which has been on display in the Lord's museum.

They first celebrated the 25th anniversary last weekend in New Delhi, when the team were feted by the top brass of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at a dinner attended by former captains, cabinet ministers and officials at a luxury hotel.

The gathering at Lord's was organised by Gavaskar, while liquor baron Vijay Mallya sponsored the dinner.

A diamond-studded bat signed by all the team members as well as a specially-designed ball also covered in diamonds are to be auctioned in a few weeks by Mallya's United Breweries group to mark the occasion, with the proceeds being shared equally by the members of the 1983 squad.

Since 1983, India's best World Cup finish has been the runners-up spot achieved by skipper Sourav Ganguly's side in South Africa in 2003 when they lost to Australia in the final.

In the last edition in 2007 in the Caribbean, India suffered the embarrassment of being knocked out in the first round after losing to minnows Bangladesh and eventual finalists Sri Lanka.

The next World Cup will be jointly hosted by cricket's four leading Asian nations -- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh -- in 2011.

LONDON: Mahendra Singh Dhoni wants his Dazzlers to emulate Kapil's Devils at Lord's next year by holding the Twenty20 World Cup aloft the 1983 champions who are now celebrating the silver jubilee of their historic triumph.

Dhoni said he would like to become the first India captain after Kapil Dev in 1983 to lift a trophy at Lord's.

"I would love to do that. It's the team that makes a good captain and I would like to distribute the pressure and responsibility around the whole team. It would be a dream to lift the trophy at Lord's..," Dhoni said a day before tickets are to go on sale here for the championship

Dhoni said his team will carry a lot of expectations of the people in India as his team are the defending champions.

"For us, of course, the last year's world championship in South Africa was memorable and it was a great feeling to lift that trophy. We had gone into it as underdogs -- no one really expected us to win it as we had barely played one Twenty20 International match before the tournament."

"It was a great tournament and one of the things I will cherish for the rest of my life."

Dhoni said they would be looking for support from the large Indian community in England.

"We are lucky because it seems wherever we go we get a lot of support. In South Africa last year, especially in Durban, there were crowds of India supporters and I know that there is a huge Indian community in England too."

England captain Paul Collingwood said he was looking forward to what should be a thrilling tournament.

"Already, Twenty20 cricket is massive. It's great to play in it and from a player's point of view it is obviously a shortened form of the game but it is very intense and every single ball matters."

KARACHI, PTI: India launch their campaign in the Asia Cup cricket tournament against minnows Hong Kong here on Wednesday hoping to get into top form ahead of their crucial tie against archrival Pakistan on Thursday.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men should not face much resistance from Hong Kong, but the Indians are in no mood to take their opponents lightly in what is likely to be a one-sided floodlit contest at the National Stadium.

KARACHI: India have decided to rest all-rounder Irfan Pathan for their opening match of the Asia Cup against minnows Hong Kong on Wednesday as the Baroda pacer is yet to recover from a side strain.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said there is no major injury concern with Pathan but "it has been decided to give him some rest".

Pathan may play the second match on June 26 against hosts Pakistan.

The Indian team underwent a long and strenuous practice session under lights at the National stadium with Dhoni, who has indicated he will bat up the order, spending quite long time at the nets.

There were reports that Pathan has picked up a knee injury after the Kitply Cup last week but Dhoni said, "it was not serious and the left arm pacer just needed some rest".

LONDON: Many of England players, who missed the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League, are ready to consider premature retirement from international cricket to play in the cash-rich Twenty20 competition, according to a survey conducted by the Professional Cricketers Association.

According to a website, a total of 334 cricketers, including 15 who represented England last winter, were questioned before the 2008 season and around half of the England stars said they would consider "retiring prematurely" for the IPL money.

"It is clear the new monies since the Indian leagues have unbalanced the cricketing landscape. It seems unlikely that any other competition around the cricketing world could put as much money on the table and create a competition of equal proportions in the near future," the PCA said.

"And therefore IPL will remain a threat, a force and an opportunity to the cricketing world for some time to come," it was quoted as saying by the website.

The survey, made public on Monday, was carried out before the recent announcement of a 50m series between England and a West Indies XI, backed by billionaire Sir Allen Stanford.

But the Stanford plan would not preclude England players from also pursuing IPL contracts, whenever their international commitments and county permit.

The survey also revealed that 45 per cent players would consider signing up for the ICL, even though it could result in a 12-month ban from county cricket, and 89 per cent believe "freedom of movement should prevail in regard to Indian cricket leagues".

However, 56 per cent agreed with the statement that "Twenty20 and its growing popularity threaten other forms of the game".

The PCA also expressed concerns about Twenty20 domination of cricket in its report which forms the background for the survey results.

"The current imbalance between remuneration for Twenty20 cricket and the longer forms of the game does present a very real threat to the existing fabric of the game," the report states.

"The financial rewards offered by the Indian leagues will entice players to retire early from county and international cricket - and senior players at that. The impact on the strength of our international sides would be huge.

"This would have the potential to significantly devalue our TV rights as well as reducing the attraction of English cricket to the fans."

The PCA recommends a gap in the international cricket schedule in March and April to prevent England players having to choose between their country and the financial attractions of the sub-continent.

The Twenty20 game, when it started out to be a bit of a fun is now going way over the top with "money" being the be all end all of everything.

MUMBAI: With the disappointment of losing the tri-series final to Pakistan behind them, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday said his side would look to build solid partnerships in the middle overs to do well at the Asia Cup starting on June 24 in Pakistan.

"We have done well on the last tour to Pakistan (2006), but that's in the past and has no relevance now. I agree with Muthaiah Muralitharan's views (expressed recently that India were favourites) to the extent that if we play to our capabilities we can win the Asia Cup," the flamboyant wicket-keeper-batsman said before the team left for Karachi today.

"But we will have to be our best and I hope we can do it," he added.

Four-time champions India start their campaign in the six-team tournament, which concludes on July 6, with a match against minnows Hong Kong on June 24.

They take on hosts and archrivals Pakistan the next day at the National Stadium in what is billed as the revenge clash for Dhoni and his men, who were defeated by Shoaib Malik's team in Bangaldesh in the tri-series final on June 14.

The other three teams in the fray, in a different preliminary group, are Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and UAE.

Dhoni singled out the middle overs as the most crucial phase and said if the team can keep enough wickets in hand while going at a rate of 4.5 or 5 then even 100 runs are not impossible to get in the last 10 overs.

"We did well in the middle overs against Bangladesh and Pakistan in the league phase (in tri-series in Dhaka), but lost a few wickets in the final which put us under pressure (chasing Pakistan's 315)," the Indian limited overs captain said a pre-departure media conference.

Dhoni said despite the fact that Yusuf Pathan was given only four overs in Bangladesh, the team had the confidence that he can deliver the goods both with his off-breaks and bat.

"We have full confidence in not only his bowling but also batting. He has done well in first class cricket and in Challenger Series. In Bangladesh Virender Sehwag was turning the ball more on that pitch and was preferred. But we will give him (Pathan) enough opportunity", he said.

Coach Gary Kirsten gave the thumbs up to the young batsmen in the team by saying they were capable of carrying the burden on their shoulders in the absence of seniors (Sachin Tendulkar who is injured, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid who were not picked).

"We have an extremely talented group of players," said the former South African Test and ODI opener ahead of the departure of the squad.

Kirsten described the tournament as important for the coming season ahead. "It will be a good experience. It will be beneficial for the season ahead if we can win it. Our goal will be to win the tournament."

Asked about the 1983 World Cup victory by Kapil's Devils, who are being felicitated by the cricket board in Delhi, Dhoni said the triumph re-defined cricket in India.

"We see those moments at Lord's when they won the World Cup as a big motivation for us and a big achievement. We won the Twenty20 World Cup (last year in South Africa) and want to win the 50-over World Cup too," he said.

Dhoni was stumped when asked what he was doing when India won the World Cup 25 years ago. "I was drinking milk," he said, and then added with a smile "I was only two years old".

KARACHI, June 23: Pakistan and Bangladesh both face minnows as the ninth Asia Cup begins on Tuesday, with the hosts hoping the event passes smoothly to pave the way for more international cricket in future.

Pakistan has been hit by political upheaval and a wave of suicide bombings in the past year, which have claimed more than 1,000 lives, although the violence has tailed off in recent months.

However, if Pakistan stages the Asia Cup without any trouble then foreign teams will be left with little choice other than to take part in the ICC event.

The ICC last week gave Pakistan the all-clear for the September tournament but said it will continue to monitor the situation.

Pakistan, which is staging the Asia Cup for the first time since its inception in 1984, is confident of a positive start to the competition.

"We are confident that if we play tough cricket we can win the competition," said captain Shoaib Malik ahead of his team's Group B match, adding that the match against archrivals India on Thursday will be the key to reaching the final.

"We will take it match by match. First up is Hong Kong and we don't want any let ups in that match which we should win without any discomfort," said Malik.

Hong Kong's English coach Aftab Habib said his side would remember the Irish feat of upsetting Pakistan in the World Cup held in the Caribbean last year.

"Cricket is a funny game and we should remember there were lots of upsets in the 2007 World Cup so we must give it our best to upset Pakistan," said Habib, who played two Tests for England in 1999.

In Lahore, Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful is eyeing a spot in the second round with a win over the UAE.

"Our first target is to get a place in the second round so we should play quality cricket to beat the UAE and then focus on the bigger game against Sri Lanka," said Ashraful.

For UAE they have no choice but to try to upset Bangladesh. "We have prepared well for this competition and know that the only chance to reach the second round is to beat Bangladesh," said UAE captain Saqib Ali.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the super league where each side will play each other to decide the July 6 finalists.

NEW DELHI: Buoyed by the roaring success of Indian Premier League (IPL), Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday promised more Twenty20 showbiz that will keep the country's cricket lovers hooked on to television.

After IPL, the latest blockbuster from BCCI will be the Twenty20 Champions League to be hosted in India in late September this year and will feature top two domestic sides from India, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa and England.

The eight-day tournament will have a whopping prize purse of $10 million, double the amount given away in IPL.

The winners of the Champions League will take home $5 million, almost five times the amount of IPL champions Rajasthan Royals, who won $1.2 million. The runners-up will receive $2.5 million.

"There will be more sleepless nights for Indian cricket lovers," a beaming Lalit Modi, BCCI vice-president and IPL Chairman announced on Sunday.

"IPL was a huge success. More than 99 million of the 135 million TV viewers watched IPL. We could not have asked for more," Modi said.

Australia will be represented by Victoria and Western Australia, the winners and runners-up respectively of KFC T20 Big Bash.

The South African challenge will be spearheaded by Nashua Titana, who won the Standard Pro T20 league, and KwaZulu Natal Dolphins. England's domestic T20 tournament is being played while Pakistan's will have its tournament in August this year.

The IPL story is being emulated by other cricket boards as well and Texas Billionaire Allen Stanford has struck a deal with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to hosts a Twenty20 match between the two sides for five years for whopping $100 million.

Stanford is planning another tournament with four top cricketing nations.

"ECB and WICB are getting together for this Twenty20 event and it is for the good of the game," said Modi.

BCCI, in its working committee meeting Sunday, lauded Modi for his efforts in making IPL a great success.

DUBAI: India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is confident that his team will carry on the good form to win the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in September.

"The Indian team did very well in limited-overs cricket in 2007-08. Winning the One-day series in Australia was a monumental achievement. Not only did we beat the World Cup winners, but also Sri Lanka, which was runner-up in the Caribbean.

"We would like to continue in the same vein and take the Champions Trophy home with us to India," Dhoni said in a statement

Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik also said that his team, after lifting the Kitply Cup tri-series, is ready to give its best to win the tournament on home turf. Incidentally Pakistan defeated India to win the tri-series in Bangladesh.

"It is my dream to captain my country to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy on home soil and my team will be doing everything we can to convert this dream into reality," he said.

"I am sure that there will be a fantastic atmosphere for all the games and that the people of Pakistan will make it a happy and memorable event," he added.

Malik also said that defeating India last week showed that they are in a good form.

"I think this could be one of the most closely contested tournaments for a long time," he said.

Webinfosys's Sports News : Pakistan's Asif returns home after drug case dropped

KARACHI: Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif returned home early Friday after Dubai prosecutors dropped charges of possession of an illegal drug and ordered his deportation.

The 25-year-old fast bowler was held at Dubai airport on June 1 while returning home from a domestic tournament in India, and charged with possessing a small amount of opium.

But Dubai Public prosecutors dropped the case on Thursday citing "insignificance" and announced he would be deported to Pakistan.

Asif arrived at Karachi international airport on Friday morning, before being whisked to a domestic terminal for a flight to the eastern city of Lahore.

The Pakistan Cricket Board earlier welcomed the decision to drop the case, adding that it "is relieved that his ordeal is over."

"We appreciate the professional manner in which the whole issue was dealt with by the Dubai police, prosecution department and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities," it said in a statement.

"The drug tests conducted on Asif during the investigations in Dubai were clear and negative for any contraband substance," the statement said.

The PCB will conduct its own immediate inquiry into the case, once official records are received from UAE authorities, it said.

The Federal Investigation Authority in Pakistan said last week they will also deal with Asif under their rules and regulations.

Mohammad Al Nuaimi, the Dubai prosecutor who handled the charges, said on Thursday that the case "has been dropped against Mohammad Asif due to insignificance ..."

"It is definite that he committed the crime of smuggling and possessing 0.24 grams of opium as he was caught red-handed ... however in certain cases and for a faster litigation process the public prosecution drops a case due to insignificance and deports the suspect," he said, according to the online version of the local daily Gulf News.

Asif, a fast rising bowler, was also banned for one year after he and fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar tested positive for nandrolone in September 2006.

Akhtar was banned for two years however the punishments were later overturned on appeal.

Asif, who has claimed 51 wickets in 11 Test matches and 36 wickets in 31 One-Day Internationals, was dropped from the team after being initially named in the 16-man squad for the tri-series in Bangladesh.

Pakistan won the tri-series beating India by 25 runs in the June 14 final.

Webinfosys's Sports News :Pakistan axe keeper Akmal for Asia Cup

KARACHI: Pakistani selectors have dropped experienced wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal for the Asia Cup tournament, which starts next week.

Akmal was omitted from a list of 20 players picked to attend a short training camp, from which a 15-member squad will be named for the June 24-July 6 contest in Pakistan.

India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong are the other countries taking part.

Akmal, 26, has been axed after being ever-present since 2004 although he was rested for three One-day games last year in which the selectors tried out young keeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

"Kamran remains our number one keeper but we also wanted to give chances to others and we felt Kamran also deserved to take a well deserved rest," chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said.

Akmal who has played in 38 Tests and 88 One-dayers, has been told to get over a extended period of inconsistent form behind the stumps.

The final squad is due to be named on June 22.

The selectors had no other surprises for the tournament although pacer Mohammad Asif will not take part as he remains in detention in Dubai on suspicion of carrying illegal drugs.

Mystically Ours. This is not the name of a pedigreed racing horse but an equally divine knock that helped the Indian cricket team gallop towards the semi-finals of a World Cup, and beyond.

That innings belong to us, all of India, as it came from a man whose batting style was totally uncomplicated. He was skillful but carefree; he was sublime but error-prone. He was a leader and a rebel with an undying positive approach.

We always dreamt of playing knocks to that effect in galli cricket; but this man played it on the biggest stage: the World Cup.

And, to add to the mystic, that piece of gold remains a mystery even now as the match was never televised nor captured in video. Hence critics, players and Level III coaches can't dissect/analyse that knock and molest its immortality.

It's quite obvious that we are talking about Kapil Dev's 175 not out against Zimbabwe in a group game during the 1983 World Cup at Tunbridge Wells. Today (Wednesday) is the silver jubilee of that golden lining.

It's interesting to note that the venue (Nevill Ground) hasn't hosted a single ODI hence. That was the only ODI played at Kent's stadium which hosts 4,500 spectators. (Even the 1996 World Cup West Indies-Kenya match, part of history now, was played at an irregular venue like Pune.)

Fine, Kapil's knock came against lowly Zimbabwe and on a small ground. And opposite skipper Duncan Fletcher, who had starred in Zimbabwe's shock win over Australia in the same World Cup, could have made a mistake by removing successful bowlers (Rowson and Curran) out of the attack after their initial spells of 7-8 overs.

But the knock couldn't have come at a better moment. After all, a spot in the semis was at stake. India were reeling at 17-5 in this 60-over game before Kapil decided to take centrestage. And out of his 175, hundred came in boundaries (16x4s, 6x6s, 138 balls, 181 mins). And if memory has woken up from the right side of bed, there was also a ‘ran four' with Syed Kirmani.

Kapil and Kirmani had an unbeaten 126-run stand for the ninth wicket. It still remains the highest ninth wicket partnership in ODIs. Kirmani's 24 was the second-highest of the Indian innings. In the end, India posted 266 and won by 31 runs with Kapil sealing it with caught and bowled of last man John Traicos.

Kapil's 175 was an ODI record at that time which was broken by Viv Richards (189 not out at Manchester) in a 55-over game against England the following year. Saeed Anwar, the current record holder, bettered Richards with 194 against India in the Independence Cup of 1997 in fewer overs (50).

Kapil's 175 and India's first win over West Indies in West Indies (Berbice, 1983) gave India amazing belief which culminated into numerous One-day triumphs in the mid-'80s. Until Javed Miandad shattered that belief in Sharjah with a last-ball six in April 1986.

BIRMINGHAM: The second One-Day International between England and New Zealand ended in a no result at Edgbaston on Wednesday after rain prevented a finish.

New Zealand were set 160 from 23 overs according to the Duckworth-Lewis calculation used in weather-shortened games, altered from 165 from 24 because of continued rain afer England were 162 all out in their 24-over allotment.

New Zealand had reached 127 for two after 19 overs when the umpires -- England's Ian Gould and Australian Steve Davis -- took the players off the field due to steady rain.

There has to be 20 overs bowled to decide the match with New Zealand required to reach 134 for two after 20 overs. England captain Paul Collingwood, unbeaten New Zealand batsmen Brendon McCullum (on 60 off 51 balls) and Scott Styris (19) appeared frustrated when they were told to leave the field.

McCullum's innings was his 13th One-Day International fifty while England took more than an hour to bowl their first 14 overs.

Earlier, debutant Grant Elliott claimed three wickets to restrict England. The medium-pacer took three for 23 from his five overs after being called up from English club cricket this week following a hamstring injury to Jacob Oram.

Opener Luke Wright top scored for England with 53 from 38 balls after New Zealand won the toss in murky and damp conditions and elected to bowl.

The Kiwis trail 1-0 in the five-match series after England took the lead with a comfortable 114-run win at Durham on Sunday.
